Hello, I’m Rowan. I am an artist based in Wisconsin. I work primarily in illustration and design. I’m a multimedia artist, combining my true love—inking, with painting, collage, and digital art.
I am a very process-oriented artist. I am happiest when I’m making ink marks on paper. The tactile side of art, the mind-body connection, the working-with-your-hands of it all, is what excites me. I strive to convey this in my work. I keep my line art loose and expressive. I ink without a sketch. I leave in “mistakes”, or incorporate them, or let them change the entire piece. I am never chasing sterile perfection. It’s important to me that it feels human, spontaneous, collaborative, and layered. Having a background in performing arts and animation, I appreciate visual story-telling, and often my favorite story is the story of how an artwork was made.
I work because I feel compelled to, and because I think creativity is a gift which must be used. The world provides me with endless inspiration— folk art, fashion, gothic fantasy, forests and marshes, birds and bugs… In return, I make my art. It’s like my love letter to the world.
Mostly I illustrate for print or digital campaigns. Additionally, I’ve provided storyboards and concept art for animation, murals, and apparel design. Whatever the project, I bring storytelling, I bring a little mess, and I bring a bottomless well of wonder.
I also make comics, and I do the whole thing; script, sketching, inking, coloring, cover art. For now, I’m also distribution, and you can get my zines here.
I have provided artwork for clients such as The Big Top Chautauqua, the Red Cliff Children’s Center, the Harley Davidson Museum, and many more.
I am currently available for freelance/contract work, and am seeking representation.
